A few weeks ago a friend challenged me to join her in a poetry contest that required you to tell your life’s story in 100 words or less. It seemed almost impossible, but fun, so I decided to give it a try. I struggled with that word count…over and over and over, but finally got something on paper that pleased me and I sent it in. Much to our surprise and delight both my friend’s and my poems have been chosen to be included in an upcoming book entitled “Telling Our Stories”.

Here is my story:

Blizzard blasted the windy city

Snowy February dawn arrival

Compass to my life ahead

Noisy tomboy, leader of the pack

Summer camp, fireflies, and canoes

Too soon gave way to high school days

Dorm life at a small religious school

Boyfriends, band, choir and yearbook

College campus seemed so big

All night sessions earn RN license

Sacred nuptials, precious progeny

Careening down a path toward heartbreak

Betrayal, mistrust, divorce

Breast cancer three times, cancer nurse must quit

New career, new love, new marriage

Grandkids fill the room, decades flown by.

Time for a new tomboy

Who will catch the firefly?

Hoping you too will share your story with people you love.
